Daily Risk Prevention: Little Choices that Work to enhance Safety.
The daily risk prevention is the active way of identifying normal risks that are present in daily life and make minor, deliberate changes that would lower the exposure rates to risk. The common thinking of most people is that most risks of safety are extreme or most occurrences of injuring or exposing to unsafe conditions during everyday activities like walking around the house, cooking, getting to work, commuting, using household devices or doing light chores are more common than the extraordinary or the extraordinary. These activities are very common and thus when they occur, a lot of minimal conscious effort is exercised. This unconscious action makes one vulnerable. Risk prevention is a process of deceleration of the mind and returning consciousness to these daily experiences. By being more conscious of their movement, the way they organize their environments as well as the way they approach their surroundings, people will greatly mitigate the risk of accidents and traumas. Prevention of risk is not about living in fear and hyper-vigilance. It is associated with considerate observation and real life habit modification.
There are a lot of latent hazards present in the home environment that people never recognize due to familiarity. Poor lighting, unsteady furniture, loose carpets, cluttered walkways, slippery floors, exposed electrical cords and improperly stored chemicals all predispose accidents. With time, individuals become used to these conditions and cease to perceive them as something dangerous. The prevention of everyday risks is associated with the periodical observation of the living space with new eyes. Possible tripping areas within the home environment, which may be noticed by walking through the house, maintaining good lighting in the corridors and staircases, tying down the carpet, sorting out storage spaces, anchoring unsteady furniture, and storing sharp items and chemicals in a safe manner can also go a long way in minimizing the risk. These measures do not involve significant renovations and costly equipment. These include uncomplicated organization and maintenance which make living a secure environment.
There is also general riskiness in the public places and one has to be careful. Sidewalks are congested, intersections are active, parking space is usually used, shopping malls are crowded, and transportation programs are prevalent with movement and the risks that it presents. Multi-tasking with cell phones, haste or being preoccupied with thoughts makes one less aware of what goes on around them. Risk prevention is being present. Watching traffic movement, eye contact with other road users prior to crossing a street, physical awareness of the people around, and selecting the routes with a lot of light aids in safe navigation. Risk is minimized by being aware of environmental alterations, e.g. construction areas or irregular surfaces.
One of the most important fields of daily risk is transportation. Seatbelts, traffic code, driving without distractors and attention as a pedestrian or cyclist will go a long way in preventing injuries. Accidents happen due to lack of concentration or bad judgment in a few seconds. Risk prevention also means that transportation is an activity that should be given complete attention and respect.
The awareness, organization and routine build everyday safety.
Avoidance of risk favours confidence, and stability as well as peace of mind.
